Highway Star — Deep Purple - Organ Solo Reconstruction - One Man Band
Highway Star — Deep Purple
Jon Lord's Hammond organ is the soul of this Deep Purple classic — distorted through Marshall stacks, played like Bach, and louder than the guitars. Here's my one-man-band reconstruction: drums, bass, rhythm guitar and Hammond, all by one person.

🎵 The Song
- Artist: Deep Purple
- Year: 1972
- Album: Machine Head
- Fun Fact: Jon Lord didn't use Leslie speakers for his Hammond — he ran it through Marshall Major amplifier stacks, giving the organ a distorted, guitar-like ferocity. The solo is composed in a Baroque style — rapid arpeggios in harmonic minor à la Bach. Machine Head was recorded in the Grand Hotel, Montreux, after the casino fire immortalised in "Smoke on the Water."
🎹 The Challenge
Highway Star features one of the most technically demanding organ solos in rock history. Jon Lord's playing combines classical virtuosity — Baroque-style fast arpeggios — with hard rock fury. Recreating it as a one-man-band means layering every element of a full Deep Purple live performance: thunderous drums, locked-in bass, raw rhythm guitar, and at the center, a Hammond that fills every space.
The main challenge was capturing Lord's signature distorted organ tone — historically achieved by pushing Marshall stacks to the edge. On the modern Hammond XK-1c, that meant dialing in overdrive and spring reverb to approximate that untamed 1972 character.

🎵 La Canción
- Artista: Deep Purple
