Losing My Religion - R.E.M. - Mandolin Intro Reconstruction - One Man Band
Losing My Religion — R.E.M.
Peter Buck picked up a mandolin backstage and came up with one of the most recognisable riffs in alternative rock history — in under five minutes. Here is my one-man-band reconstruction of that mandolin intro.

- Fun Fact: "Losing My Religion" is a Southern American idiom meaning "at the end of one's rope" — it has nothing to do with literal religion, which confused many international listeners. Peter Buck had only recently started playing mandolin when he came up with the arpeggiated riff backstage in under five minutes. Mike Mills originally played a Hammond organ as the harmonic guide; that part was later replaced by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra strings layered into the final mix.
The Challenge
The mandolin riff that opens "Losing My Religion" is deceptively simple — four notes, arpeggiated, cycling relentlessly. The challenge is capturing that wide, shimmering stereo spread: the original has multiple mandolin tracks panned hard left and right, creating the sense that the instrument surrounds you.
Four mandolin tracks (two left, two right) were needed to recreate that effect — a small ensemble built from a single instrument, all played on the Harley Benton HBMA-100.
